Wojtek Victor Wejer i Jimmy Cornell
.
Do nagrody tej został nominowany podwójnie:
1. Za szerokie, zdalne, wspieranie jachtów żeglujących przez Przejście Północno-Zachodnie W latach 2006-2016 Wojtek (Victor) Wejer dostarczał wielu jachtom bezinteresowne rady dotyczące pogody, zalodzenia i wyboru trasy.
2. Wojtek (Victor) Wejer przyczynił się do bezpiecznego i pomyślnego pokonania Przejścia Północno-Zachodniego przez wiele jachtów. Dostarczał bezinteresownie wyważone informacje i ekspertyzy wszystkim, którzy

2016 Winner of Ocean Cruising Club Award of Merit - Congratulations!

Dear Victor,
On behalf of the 2016 OCC Awards Sub-committee, it gives me great
pleasure to inform you that you have been voted as the winner of the
2016 OCC Award of Merit, “for an outstanding achievement in the sailing
community ...” May I be the first to offer you both officially my
sincere congratulations - it is an extremely well-deserved award.
Your two nominations for this award read:
*Award of Merit1*
For extensive, remote, support of yachts sailing the Northwest Passage.
Victor has provided free weather, ice and routing advice to many yachts
(42 from 2006-2016), including several OCC yachts.
Before I met Victor, he contacted me via email and offered his help with
anything. I was coming south from Baffin Island and looking to winter
in Toronto, where he lived, so I asked him to find a marina I could get
my boat into and live aboard for the winter, which he did. When I
sailed the NW Passage (2011), he cheerfully provided periodic weather
and ice updates to my satphone via (free) SMS messages.
Victor seems well-known among NW Passage sailors, and his name came up
multiple times last year in Ushuaia when talking with other boats
heading to Antarctica who knew of him from the NW Passage.
*Award of Merit2*
Victor Wejer has been instrumental in the success and safety of many
transits of the Northwest Passage-mine among them. He has provided
critical information and expertise without any recompense to those who
have approached him for advice as well as cautioning the dreamers and
the unwary concerning a dangerous undertaking. From 2006 until 2016 he
has given assistance to 42 sailing vessels making the passage including
the first sailboat to transit by way of Fury and Hecla Strait (2016).
Over the years he has collected information concerning methods,
shelters, anchorages, ice conditions and equipment from both voyagers
who have succeeded as well as those who have failed in their attempts to
sail this unique and often very unpredictable passage. Victor has
collated various accounts to create a truly valuable body of work which
he updates and regularly shares. He takes an interest in voyagers in the
NW Passage as I can personally attest and is a friend to many as well as
an advisor taking into account crew as well as vessel strength. I can
think of no better example of Victor's invaluable advise than to quote
an early communication to me; "I have gotten many calls from different
adventurers wanting to make the NW crossing. For most I strongly advise
them to stay away. One has to have the correct mindset. This is not an
adventure, it's a dangerous trip for the unprepared. A perfect crossing
will have no story to tell at the end. No problems. No issues. No
disasters. All ice openings are taken advantage of. As one Arctic
explorer used to say 'adventure is a sign of incompetence.'" I think
Victor Wejer is strongly deserving of the OCC Award of Merit for his
unselfish and outstanding service and advise to international Arctic
sailors.
I have also attached below some of the judges’ comments for your
enjoyment – well done.
The formal Awards presentation will take place during the OCC Annual
Awards Weekend on 2nd April 2017, at the Greenlands Campus,
Henley-on-Thames, UK. I am not sure if you would be able to attend, but
if you can please confirm with both myself and Rachelle asap so we can
schedule things. And don’t forget to have an acceptance speech ready and
waiting!
Daria Blackwell will require additional information for press releases
to be placed on both the OCC website and to the media worldwide; see the
details below. As always, time is of the essence as we would like to put
press releases out to both the membership and the media as soon as
possible, so your prompt response would be appreciated.
All the very best wishes for 2017,
Jenny Crickmore-Thompson, Annual Awards

Judge’s responses:
My vote goes to Victor Wejerfor his invaluable contribution to the safe
passage of so many sailors attempting the NW Passage.
I am always impressed by people who freely share knowledge and help
people with not so much as a penny in return. Victor has clearly become
appreciated and respected as an expert on one of the worlds most
challenging sailing passages. He doesn't take it lightly and warns
people about what lies ahead. He tirelessly helps each individual and
while the skipper will take the claim for the successful passage, no
doubt those skippers will attribute much of their success to the help of
people like Victor.
The service provided (free) by Victor Wejer to NWP sailors would appear
to be outstanding - along the lines of Herb!
Victor has collected information concerning methods, shelters,
anchorages, ice conditions and equipment creating, according those
voyaging north, a truly valuable body of work which he updates and
regularly shares. So his is one of providing vital information to the
wider sailing community.

Cheers,
Wojtek Wejer
